Movies Under the Stars
It’s
June and already hot outside. I hate the
heat but there is something unique about sitting outside under the stars and
watching a movie with friends or family.
It’s relaxing, enjoyable and when the sun finally sets the heat can be
tolerable – just bring water. You don’t
have to sneak in snacks or pizza or better popcorn like you do at an indoor
theater, or freeze to death because they crank up the AC and you end up wanting
to wear a parka and boots.
There
are plenty of choices around the Kansas City area in June, July and August to
go watch movies outside. The closest one
to me is the Moonlight Movies on the Independence Square in Independence. These are family friendly films shown every
Thursday night at 9pm in the theater parking lot and it is free. Yay!
The
one outdoor option I’m real interested in this year is at Crown Center called
the Weekender. They run every Friday
night at 9pm in July and the first Friday in August for free. Note, though, you need to get there early as
they open at 6pm because there will be a live band playing before each movie
starts. It’s the movie selection I’m
drawn towards, though. “The Goonies” is
playing July 8th, “Clueless” on the 15th, “The Avengers”
on the 22nd and so on.
Goonies, cool chicks and super heroes – can’t beat that.
Briarcliff
Village in Kansas City is another option to watch outdoor movies. Films are shown at Mulberry Lake across from
the Village at Briarcliff every Saturday night in June and July around 8:45pm
for free. Grease will be their next
feature this Saturday, June 18th.
If you’re not a fan of musicals, go July 9th to see the last “Hunger
Games” movie or bring your kids July 23rd to watch “Frozen”.
Of
course, you can choose to watch first run films at any drive-in theater. They feature two movies for one price. The I-70 drive-in and the Twin drive-in
theaters are open all summer long.
Now
don’t forget to bring bug spray along with your blankets and lawn chairs as you
sit out under the stars and enjoy watching movies this summer.
